Each year, hundreds of women seek safety and shelter at Bethlehem Haven.
Women like Barbara who found herself homeless on her 74th birthday. All she wanted was $20 for lunch with her friend. But her son wouldn’t allow it. The argument escalated. He hit her. And, that was it. She packed everything she had in her car and left.
“I own that house. But he can have it. I’m never going back.”
Her son moved in with her after his divorce. It wasn’t long until he took over her bank accounts and wiped them out. He controlled everything.
“When he was drinking, his dark side came out. I just couldn’t stay there anymore. It wasn’t safe.”
Barbara turned to Bethlehem Haven for help. “They immediately put me into a hotel so I didn’t have to sleep in my car. They helped me with my security deposit and rent. I got my bank accounts back in my name and now I should be fine.”
Unfortunately, Barbara’s story is not uncommon. Too many older women are falling victim to abusive adult children. But you stepped up to help.
A warm hug, a shoulder to cry on, a hand up when it was needed most – these are the priceless moments you have offered to the women at Bethlehem Haven.
Being homeless is a very lonely place to be – with no friends or family to turn to – but you made hundreds of women know that they were not alone. They could count on you.
